To visit us you travel along the historic Mackenzie Highway, then on now municipally owned high-grade gravel. The original road was constructed through the bush in about 1967, it was maintained by the main Oil companies in the area. In 1996 the MD began construction on the public road and will replace the privately owned road. Construction was completed in the fall of 2000.
The MD of Mackenzie covers approximately 77,495 kms which is about 12% of the Province's land mass. Which makes it the largest municipal district in Alberta. Prior to 1995, this region known as the MD of Mackenzie was Improvement District No.23. Administration was provided through the Alberta Municipal Affairs, with locally elected advisory councillors.
Mrs. Betty Bateman has been the Zama (Ward 10) council representative since 1980. Betty and her husband Jim moved to Zama City in 1968, where they still reside. Both Betty and Jim commercial fish yearly on Bistcho Lake. Betty has been an integral part of making Zama City what is today, with her vision and dedication to the community we have seen growth and action where we might not have, without her strong voice and commitment.
