teen River Meteorite Impact Crater - The largest known crater in Western Canada is located by and called the 'Steen River' structure located (59°30'N, 117°38'W). Which was found very early in the geophysical investigation of Alberta for petroleum. Impacts obviously disrupt the normal sedimentary sequence and stick out in seismic data. The central dome of the Steen River structure was drilled (in the 50's) and shock melted glass was retrieved!
Oil is produced from the flanks of this structure - they are good places to look because the flanks on large craters are heavily faulted increasing the probability of fluid traps. The meteor is approximately 95 million year old, and 25 kilometers in diameter. | | |
